Regis Le Bris: 'I don't think we've have a regular starter in those two positions'

Instead, the Black Cats boss expects to continue ‘mixing and matching’ his wide options in the remaining games in the Premier League and FA Cup.

Sunderland’s wide positions have been in a state of flux for much of the campaign, with the likes of Bertrand Traore (who is currently injured), Simon Adingra (who joined Monaco on loan in January) Chemsdine Talbi and Romaine Mundle trying to establish themselves as regular starters.

Enzo Le Fee and Trai Hume have also regularly been positioned in the wide-attacking areas, with Nilson Angulo and Jocelin Ta Bi now additional options following their arrival in the January window.

While Le Bris has tended to make very few changes in most areas of the pitch this season, the wide-attacking positions have been a notable exception, and the Sunderland boss does not expect that to change in the next three months.

“I believe for our wingers now, it’s really hard to design a plan with three, four, five, six consecutive games because of the difficulty and the demand of the Premier League,” said Le Bris, who was speaking ahead of this afternoon’s home game with Fulham.

“It's more about two players for one position. One can start and the other can finish. Maybe you can start two or three games in a row, but you won't go all the way often.

“If we can combine two and two, they will grow and maybe they will find the right level of confidence.”

Angulo and Ta Bi will be hoping to force their way into the first-team picture in the next few weeks following their January arrival from Anderlecht and Maccabi Netanya respectively.

Angulo started the league defeat to Liverpool, and could find himself back in the starting line-up against Fulham this afternoon, while Ta Bi made his Sunderland debut as a second-half substitute in last weekend’s FA Cup win over Oxford United.

“I think their profiles are really well connected with our game identity," said Le Bris. “We like playing with wide wingers, and it's not easy to fill this position, especially with young players.

“This league is so demanding that probably it's impossible right now to maintain the level [consistently]. So, we started with young players, they were good sometimes, but struggled to maintain the same level.

“We need more energy, maybe more depth, and those two players are there for that reason. And after that, with opportunities, we never know how they will grow.

“Sometimes, you have really good surprises, because it's quick. Sometimes, you need to support them for a long period. Maybe a loan is useful sometimes, but we believe that they will grow.”
