Dan Burn gives brutally honest Newcastle United disallowed goal verdict after Manchester City…

Dan Burn had a goal disallowed for Newcastle United at Manchester City on Saturday evening.

Newcastle United were beaten 2-1 at Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening - but a big talking point after the game was Dan Burn’s disallowed goal.

Nico O’Reilly scored either side of Lewis Hall’s equaliser as Man City approached half-time leading. But Newcastle thought they’d equalised for a second time when Burn headed in from Sandro Tonali’s free-kick.

But the flag quickly went up to rule out the goal with a quick VAR check upholding the on-field decision.

While replays showed Burn in an offside position when the ball was delivered into the box, they also showed how he got into the position. The Newcastle defender was onside but was pushed offside by Manchester City defender Ruben Dias.

It prompted a discussion into whether the goal should have been allowed, the free-kick retaken or a penalty awarded to Newcastle. As the ball was not in play at the time of the push, a penalty could not have been awarded to Newcastle and the goal could not have been allowed as the goalscorer was in an offside position.

Had the match officials seen Dias’ push on Burn and deemed it a foul then the free-kick could have been retaken, but it wasn’t.

Eddie Howe on NUFC disallowed goal

“I only saw it from the viewpoint that I thought he was offside so I didn't see the push because I'm looking at a still frame really,” Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said.

“I don't think we were on the right end of the decisions today, but I don't want to go down that road. I'm not one of those managers that wants to continually criticise officials, but I thought again it was one we probably didn’t get the right end of the decisions.”

Dan Burn makes honest admission on disallowed goal

When speaking to the club’s website about his disallowed goal, Burn said: “Yeah, I've not seen it again to be honest.I felt sort of pushed on the back and I think maybe if I'm a little bit better with it I could probably make more of a meal of it, but I'm not great at doing that.

“So yeah, I've not seen it back, but as I said someone said that I was pushed and it's quite hard to get back on the side once you've been sort of pushed offside.”

But when speaking to Viaplay Football, Burn was honest in admitting: “Yes, he did [push me]. But as a defender, I do the same thing.”
