Wolves will face a battle to keep hold of the starlet at the end of the season
Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes has emerged as a ‘main target’ for Napoli this summer, according to Italian news outlet Tuttomercatoweb. His long-term future at Molineux is up in the air amid attention from elsewhere. His contract expires in June 2030.
Rob Edwards’ side are back in action on Sunday afternoon. They face an away trip to Selhurst Park to play Crystal Palace. The Midlands outfit remain bottom of the Premier League table and they are in the drop zone along with Burnley and West Ham.
Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes ‘main target’ for Napoli
Wolves will face a serious battle to keep hold of Gomes at the end of this season. They look well on their way to relegation to the Championship and he won’t want to play in the second tier. He was linked with Manchester United and Crystal Palace during the January transfer window but nothing materialised in the end and he stayed put beyond the deadline.
Gomes, 25, is a Brazil international with 10 caps to his name. He rose up through the academy at Flamengo and was a regular for them at various different youth levels before breaking into the first-team. The Rio de Janeiro-born man went on to play 122 games for their first-team and chipped in with four goals.
Wolves lured him over to England from South America back in 2022. He has since become one of their most prized assets and is a key player in the middle of the park. Gomes has played 119 matches, finding the net on seven occasions.
What has Rob Edwards said about Wolves exits?
Speaking earlier this winter, Edwards didn’t rule out Wolves exits and shared this update: “A lot of the lads want to try and maybe right some of the wrongs and want to help the club. They want to do well, of course for themselves, but for a football club as well. They really are genuinely all committed. That's not saying that no one's going to go, I'm not saying that, I've been consistent with that all the way through. But, it's not like people are banging the door down or trying to force anything. It's not the case."
He added: “They're here and absolutely committed and we'll treat everything on an individual basis. If we think it's the right thing for the club, then we might look at something, but only if it's right for us. We have got good players here, so I'm expecting there to be rumours and speculation, but at the moment that's where it is. We'll deal with something if it was to come along on an individual basis, but I'm under no pressure to sell any of those lads."
