“Humble pie” – Michael Bridges got it badly wrong on “incredible” Leeds United ace

Leeds United right-back Jayden Bogle put in another strong performance under Daniel Farke as we drew 1-1 away at Aston Villa.

United’s testing February schedule continued with a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon, looking to disrupt Unai Emery’s side in their pursuit of an unlikely title pursuit.

For Leeds, any points on the board away from home to a side in Villa’s position would be well received.

Leeds United see out 1-1 draw against Aston Villa to retain six-point gap

It looked a worry seeing that Leeds were away at Aston Villa while West Ham hosted Bournemouth in the 5:30pm kick-off slot.

However, our boys did us proud with a very good performance away at Villa Park. We deservedly took the lead as Anton Stach thumped a ridiculously good free-kick into Emi Martinez’s top corner.

Leeds had to dig in for the second half as Villa threw everything at finding an equaliser. Unfortunately, a scrappy Tammy Abraham knee was the route for Villa to breach our resistance just before the 90-minute mark.

Attention then turned to how West Ham would react against the Cherries. Thankfully for us, the Irons couldn’t build on their recent resurgence as they drew 0-0 in a relatively stale affair with a couple of opportunities either way.

As a result, Leeds remain six clear of the bottom three. Spurs are two back from Leeds ahead of their North London derby at home tomorrow.

Michael Bridges issues apology to Jayden Bogle after another strong Leeds United performance

Right-back Jayden Bogle was again a key part of Leeds quelling Villa’s threat from wide positions, among our other four in the back five.

He spoke to LUTV after the game about the match and Anton Stach’s stunner. Shortly after, he prompted a strong assessment from Michael Bridges.

“I’ve got to say he’s made me eat humble pie,” Bridges said. “The first couple of matches I was thinking defensively, when I first saw him at the club I said ‘oh, what’s he about? What’s he here for?

“Then, since he’s settled in and found his home, defensively he’s been incredible, fitness levels through the roof, deliveries, and he’s gone above and beyond expectations.

“He’s shown that he’s a Premier League footballer and he’s been brilliant for this football club.”

Jayden Bogle is much better for Leeds United than many fans are giving him credit for

He gave away a dodgy penalty on his debut against Portsmouth (it wasn’t even a penalty) and many fans have had a bee in their bonnet with Bogle ever since.

As a matter of fact, he’s been outstanding offensively, and has been more than good enough when we don’t have the ball too.

We’d have conceded a lot more goals if Bogle wasn’t good enough defensively. Bridges is right to stress that he was wrong about the right-back.

If he keeps performing this way, given the dearth of in-form right-backs, he should be in Thomas Tuchel’s thoughts next month.
