Newcastle United fought valiantly but ultimately ended up on the losing side against Manchester City.

Erling Haaland posted a bizarre photo of Dan Burn pulling his shirt following Newcastle United’s defeat to Manchester City.

It was not the usual post-match celebration from the Norwegian striker. He fired another blank against the Magpies - putting his record at just one goal in 10 games.

Haaland did create the winner for Nico O’Reilly as Man City avenged their November defeat at St James’ Park. While Newcastle produced a valiant effort, the defeat leaves them sitting 10 in the Premier League.

Erling Haaland posts bizarre picture

City goal machine Haaland appeared to take a swipe at Burn on social media. With the caption “another day at the office”, the 25-year-old chose to share a picture of the Toon defender holding his shirt.

Ironically, it was Newcastle who felt aggrieved at the referee. Many supporters believe Bernardo Silva was lucky not to be given a second yellow card for a challenge on Burn.

Haaland was also lucky not to escape further punishment after catching Malick Thiaw. As it happened, the Magpies gave a decent account of themselves at the Etihad.

Eddie Howe on referee calls

Speaking post-match, Eddie Howe once again questioned the officiating. He told reporters: "I don't think we were on the right end of the decisions today, but I don't want to go down that road. I'm not one of those managers who wants to continually criticise officials, but I thought, again, it was one that we probably didn't get the right end of the decisions.”

Pep Guardiola praises ‘incredible’ Newcastle United

On his team’s win, Pep Guardiola said: "Massive (result). Newcastle are an incredible team, awesome in physicality and speed they have up front,” Guardiola said. “Physicality in the middle. Really tough but the team was unbelievable.

"In Champions League (on Wednesday) it was 5-0 at half-time, the physicality and pace they have since Saudi Arabia took over the club, the way they play is so difficult. So I am pleased with the way we played today.

"Every action, (Dan) Burn, Joelinton, they put flat ball in behind, it's a really tough team. I have incredible respect for that team. Winning three times in a row (against Newcastle), in a few weeks we gave to go there again (in the FA Cup), what a nightmare.”
