Former Leeds United man Kalvin Phillips sees red in Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday clash after nightmare moment

Kalvin Phillips saw red for a terrible-looking challenge that threatened to quickly turn the balance of Sheffield United’s derby clash with Wednesday this afternoon. The Blades were 2-0 up at the break after barely getting out of second gear.

But the game shifted a little when Phillips was sent off for a poor-looking challenge on Svente Ingelsson, catching the Wednesday man in the follow-through of the challenge somewhere around the knee area.

Referee Josh Smith gave himself a second before brandishing a red card and Wednesday gained some more momentum when Charlie McNeill pulled one back after cutting onto his left foot and finding the bottom corner of Michael Cooper’s goal.

It was only Phillips’ third appearance for United since his deadline-day loan move from Manchester City and he will also now miss United’s next three games, including a huge midweek clash at home to league leaders Coventry.
