Newcastle United defender Dan Burn admitted it wasn't in his nature to make more of a controversial push by Manchester City defender Ruben Dias in Saturday night's 2-1 defeat at the Etihad.

The Magpies centre-back looked to have headed his side back level at 2-2 in a dramatic first half, before his goal was ruled out for offside.

Replays showed Burn had strayed into an offside position before he met Sandro Tonali's cross . . . but only because he was clearly pushed into an illegal position by City defender Dias.

It was a big talking point in the game, but while others may have theatrically gone down under the challenge in a bid to win a potential penalty, Burn admitted that wasn't something which crossed his mind.

“I've not seen it again," he said. "I felt a push in the back and I think if I'm a little bit better with it I could probably make more of a meal of it, but I'm not great at doing that.

"Someone said that I was pushed and it's quite hard to get back onside once you've been pushed offside. So it was just one of those.”

It was one of several key refereeing decisions which left United feeling slightly aggrieved, with Bernardo Silva also escaping a second yellow card in the second half for a blatant foul on Burn.

However, while the defeat ended Newcastle's three-match winning streak away from home, they left the Etihad with their spirits high after a confident performance which caused Pep Guardiola's title contenders plenty of problems.

United almost snatched a late equaliser when Harvey Barnes' effort went narrowly wide, and could easily have claimed the point their display merited.

Newcastle have not won in the blue half of Manchester since a League Cup victory in 2014, but Burn felt that was the best they have played at the ground in recent memory.

“Disappointed as that's probably the best we've played at City," he added.

"If you come here and they play through you amazingly and score wonder goals, you hold your hands up a little bit, but the goals we conceded were disappointing from our point of view.

“The first one was a goal kick that's been knocked down and within sort of three passes they've scored. But that's the best we've played and on another day the result could have been different.”

Newcastle now enter a run of home fixtures, starting against Qarabag in the Champions League on Tuesday night, with Everton (February 28) and Manchester United (March 4) up next.
