Newcastle United latest news: The stunning sums of money that Newcastle United can earn from this season’s Champions League have been revealed.

Newcastle United’s 6-1 victory over Qarabag in Baku on Wednesday night has moved them one step closer to pocketing a £9.55m PSR boost.

Eddie Howe’s side headed to Azerbaijan with the hope of picking up a positive result that they could bring back to England and defend on Tuesday night in the return leg. However, a scintillating first-half performance ensured that their clash at St James’ Park is all but a box ticking exercise and, unless Qarabag can pull off the miracle of all Champions League miracles, then Newcastle United will be a last-16 Champions League team.

Chelsea or Barcelona await in that round, with St James’ Park to host the first-leg of that tie before a second-leg in either London or Spain. Howe’s side will fancy their chances at beating both of those teams over two legs - even if neither of their matches against them this season have ended in a victory.

If they do as expected on Tuesday night and progress through the play-off round, then Newcastle United will find out their exact Round of 16 opponents on Friday 27 February.

Newcastle United’s Champions League prize money

Estimates have suggested that the Magpies have already banked £46.44m from their Champions League journey so far. Newcastle United received £16m just for qualifying for the competition and participating in the Champions League league phase. Their four wins, over Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica, Athletic Club and PSV Eindhoven, has topped that up by an additional £7.2m. Their draws away at Bayer Leverkusen in December and PSG last month also added an additional £1.2m to their total prize money haul.

Prize money then increases with every win in the knockout stage with an additional £9.55m available, as mentioned, for reaching the Round of 16 stage which they will almost certainly do. £10.8m is available to quarter final winners with £13m available to semi-final winners.

A place in the final in Budapest on May 30 will guarantee any club just-shy of £16m with an additional £5.6m given to the winner. Ticket revenue, including that of their home match against Qarabag on Tuesday plus TV and commercial revenues are yet to be taken into account either.

Accounts published by UEFA last week revealed that Aston Villa earned £72.86m for reaching the quarter-finals of last season’s competition. Newcastle United know that will be the kind of figure they receive if they reach the last-eight of this season’s competition - although to do that, they must beat one of Chelsea or Barcelona in the Round of 16.

These sums of money will help turbocharge Newcastle United’s income and lay the foundations for them to, hopefully, make the step to the next level. Next season’s ‘squad cost’ restrictions are set to benefit the Magpies more than the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules which have hamstrung their progress in recent seasons.

Qualifying for next season’s Champions League looks beyond them at this stage of the season, unless they are able to put together a remarkable sequence of results in their 12 remaining Premier League matches. They, therefore, will be desperate to maximise the amount of money that they can earn from their participation this season.
