Newcastle United have joined Tottenham Hotspur in monitoring a potential summer transfer swoop for an ex Liverpool bagsman.
Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be one of the Premier League clubs weighing up a summer transfer swoop to bring ex Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez back to the Premier League.
Once again, recruiting a talisman looks set to be a priority for the North London club come the end of the campaign. Dominic Solanke has struggled to keep injuries at bay while Richarlison continues to blow hot and cold when tasked with leading the line.
Spurs have invested in wide options over the past 12 months through the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Mathys Tel but and out-and-out striker remains missing. Who the club look to recruit could depend on which manager is given the permanent job after Igor Tudor.
TEAMtalk believe that one player being looked at by Tottenham Hotspur is Darwin Nunez. The 26-year-old only left Liverpool to join Saudi side Al-Hilal on a £46 million deal last summer but is linked with an exit after just 24 games and nine goals.
Al-Hilal signed Karim Benzema from rivals Al-Ittihad earlier this month and the French international’s arrival has seen Nunez dropped from the Pro League and Cup squad due to the foreign player quota.
Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United make Darwin Nunez enquiries
That means that Nunez cannot play league football again this season and that decision is believed to have hugely unsettled the player. It’s added that ‘a host of European clubs’ have now made enquiries with Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United confirmed to be among them. On the continent, Atletico Madrid and Juventus are also linked.
Nunez scored 40 goals in 143 appearances for Liverpool but was often criticised for a lack of clinical edge in the final third. One former Liverpool and Spurs player who did admire what the Uruguayan brings is Robbie Keane.
The Ferencváros head coach has been linked with the managerial job at Spurs. Speaking during Nunez’ early days at Anfield, Keane said: “I really like Darwin Nunez. I think he can be a really good player for Liverpool. Of course, he needs to improve in terms of his number of goals, but you can see the fans really respond to his energy and work rate.
“As a striker, you’re judged on scoring goals, but I’m sure that will come because he’s got everything. He’s big, he’s strong and he’s got pace.”
