Andrew Parrington says…

Mundle deserves our full support.

Whether it’s happening inside the stadium or online, these idiots must feel the full force of the club and the community, and to be shown that they’re not welcome here. If it happens inside the stadium, I hope every decent fan knows not to look away, and instead to report it.

I’ve already seen some debate about whether online comments are necessarily from Sunderland fans or not — to me, that’s irrelevant. It isn’t acceptable wherever it’s from, and as a fanbase, we have to stand firm and say loudly and clearly that we’re united against racism.

Romaine, we stand with you completely, and these cretins don’t represent us.

Ciaran McKenna says…

This news is frankly disgusting. I know that the individuals that did this are in the minority of the fan base, but the idea that any person could call themselves a Sunderland fan and then proceed to treat a player like this is sickening.

Mundle is both a brilliant footballer and a brilliant person — two things that have nothing to do with his race.

Our squad is made up of players from different backgrounds, races and religions, and this one of the beauties of sport and football: inclusion. People coming from all over to share in moments of joy. The idea that anyone — a player or a spectator — could come to a Sunderland match and be mistreated or discriminated against is horrific.

I sincerely hope that neither Mundle nor anyone else who could be affected by these racist comments will lose faith in the club.

And equally, I hope the club does everything in their power to stamp it out and ensure that these individuals never see the inside of the Stadium of Light again.

Dan Harrison says…

There’s no place in life for racism, and sport is no different.

Sunderland AFC is a club built on community values, respect and most importantly, a family spirit. Players from all walks of life come together, put on the shirt and represent our region with pride, passion and most importantly, with respect.

We stand with Mundle and anyone found reducing our players down to racial remarks doesn’t belong anywhere near the Sunderland community.

No room for racism. Not now, not ever.

John Wilson says…

The meltdown by some fans after a defeat is bad enough.

The hordes leaving early yet again astonishes me and the number of fickle fans our club has is quite depressing. But the news that Mundle has been racially abused almost defies belief or suitable words.

Every club has a percentage of dimwits but to realise we are amongst them is quite frankly sickening.

They hide behind social media. They don’t have enough respectable or honourable qualities to be a decent human being. I hope they’re caught and identified and I hope Romaine gets the support he deserves from the club, but also that he realises that if it’s from Sunderland fans, it’s a tiny fraction of our fanbase and that the love and support of the vast majority comes to the fore.

Mundle is a talent with the potential to be an excellent player.

I hope he realises this, and that we’re all behind him. The idiots who write such things will unfortunately not have the intelligence to read feedback from sites such as Roker Report. More’s the pity.

Jon Guy says…

It’s a complete tragedy that we’re seeing this vile abuse in 2026.

There’s no place for racism in any shape or form, and whatever we feel about the performances of our players, the colour of their skin or race is immaterial.

Those who have posted this vile content need to be banned for life.

Romaine, every Sunderland fan is 100% behind you, and stands with you. Please don’t let the 0.0001% detract from the fact you’re part of this huge Mackem family.

Lee Morrison says…

When someone is singled out for unfair criticism, it can regrettably lead to ridiculous situations like this, where the uneducated and ignorant are able to hide behind anonymous accounts and send racist abuse to black players.

Whilst I hope that none of the messages are from Sunderland fans directly, that isn’t entirely relevant. The reality is that we shouldn’t be talking about incidents like these occurring in 2026.

Whilst initiatives like “Show Racism the Red Card” do great work in schools, we need social media platforms to do more against anonymous accounts, where hate can be spread without fear of consequences.

As fans of football, we need to do more to stamp out racism and make a strong stand.

Whether it be a misinformed comment in the stands or an incident like this, we need to be better. Regardless of who sent the messages, I hope they’re identified quickly and that there’s police involvement. A stadium ban isn’t going to impact a sad bastard who doesn’t go to games but feels like they can send abuse online.

For Mundle, I’m certain that he’ll get the best support from the club and fellow teammates. I hope from our perspective inside the stadium that we see this as a wakeup call —doing more to support our players and perhaps thinking a bit more before saying something.

Mundle deserves our full and unwavering support, and I hope we showcase this in the upcoming games.
