The Brazil midfielder, who turns 34 on Monday, has confirmed he will depart at the end of the campaign as United are not triggering a one-year option they have on his contract worth more than £300,000 per week.

Michael Carrick, the Manchester United head coach, believes Casemiro can still play at the highest level, which opens the door to playing against his current team next season in the Premier League or Europe.

But it is understood that the United States will also emerge as a potential destination, with the lifestyle of MLS football a huge draw for the Brazilian, who was recently in Miami on holiday.

The MLS controls the salary of players across their teams, with designated players not included in the salary cap.

Inter Miami have benefited from Lionel Messi’s signing, with high-profile signings such as David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic also heading to MLS during their careers.

Casemiro has been in excellent form this season, with Carrick crediting the veteran for raising standards in training by setting an example to team-mates. The interim head coach expects the midfielder to be competing at a high level next season.

“I’m sure he can, he’s playing as good a level as he’s played at for some time at the moment, and it’s great to see in so many ways,” Carrick said.

“The experience, technically, game understanding, just composure in certain moments, he’s in a really good place.

“I’ve got to say, Cas has been fantastic since I came really, on and off the pitch.

“Experience is a great thing if you use it in the right way, and again, I think over time being a senior player here is almost the responsibility of the example, and helping the younger players, helping the rest of the boys, and passing on your experiences in a positive way.

“He’s been top since I came, in so many ways, and he’s been a pleasure to work with.”
