Skipper's strike and Barratt penalty see Cherries return to winning ways vs Gwalia

A superb strike from skipper Abby Jones gave Bournemouth the halftime lead, before Zoe Barratt scored her first goal for the club from the penalty spot to make sure of the points 11 minutes from time.

Helen Bleazard’s side were in search of a response after their first defeat in the league in more than 1,000 days at Oxford, and the three points ensures they keep pace with the top two of Watford and Plymouth.

There were chances for both sides in the opening half, with opportunities falling to Sophie Quirk, Elena Cole and Georgia Wilson for the Cherries.

Quirk shot over the bar from the right, before Cole and Wilson tested keeper Benedicte Haaland.

For Gwalia, Georgia Walters latched onto a miscued Erin Foley clearance but fired over the bar, and Foley was called into action to deny Manon Pearce after a quick break from the Welsh side.

But as it seemed that the sides would enter the interval at level pegging, captain Jones smashed home a wonderful strike to give the hosts at the Ringwood Community Hub the lead.

Jones cut out a clearance out from the back from the visitors on the edge of the D, she took a touch before firing into the top corner.

After the resumption, the Cherries sought a second goal and they went close just three minutes into the half, as Quirk curled goalwards but the ball struck the post.

Gwalia had a good opportunity as Tia Asker’s deflected effort was caught by Foley and Jessica Hennessy wasn’t far away from a Cole cross at the other end.

Jenna Markham replaced Wilson with 17 minutes to play, and she and Quirk were both denied by Haaland.

But the Cherries got their second goal when they were awarded a penalty with a little over ten minutes to play.

Barratt stepped up and fired the spot kick into the bottom corner, sending the keeper the wrong way to give Bournemouth firm control.

The three points ensure the Cherries remain in the battle for the top positions in the league.

They remain four and five points off second and first places in the league respectively, but with three games in hand off second-placed Plymouth and two in hand over Watford at the summit.

Up next, the Cherries travel to Real Bedford on Sunday, March 1.
