Brighton striker Danny Welbeck hits the target against at Brentford
Brighton attack coach Bobby Zamora fully expects Danny Welbeck to surpass last term's goal tally.
The veteran striker scored 10 Premier League goals last season for the first time in his long career. Welbeck - who netted Albion’s second in the 2-0 win at Brentford yesterday - already has nine top flight goals this campaign and the 35-year-old looks on track to hit double figures again.
"When I first came in, I obviously looked at Dan and went through his stats and I never realised he'd never scored 10 goals in a Premier League before," said Zamora to Sussex World, via Gambling.com who rank the top UK online casinos.
"That surprised me and sort of blew my mind. When I started working with him and understand how he plays as a striker, I then realised actually you probably haven't scored that number of goals because you work so hard for the team. He's forever running back, forever tracking back and filling in holes.
Get in the ‘kill zone’
"There are strikers that will not do that, that do not care about that part of the game at all. Whereas Dan will do it all and ultimately it takes you out of the kill zone more times than not, or it takes you longer to get into that kill zone.”
Zamora added: "It was nice for me to be a part of last season, obviously Danny gets 10 goals in the Premier League and this season, can he do it again?
"That was my aim last year, can Danny get 10 goals in the Premier League and this year it's can he get 11 goals in the Premier League.
"It's not down to me at all, but it's can I help, can I try and inform him of one or two bits and pieces that potentially might get a goal every week."
Welbeck has proved a great signing
Welbeck has proved an excellent piece of business for Brighton having arrived on a free transfer in 2020 after an injury-hit spell at Watford. The former Manchester United and Arsenal man has 47 goals and 17 assits in total for Brighton and he even has an outside chance of making Thomas Tuchel's England squad for this summer's World Cup.
"What you see is what you get with Dan," said Zamora. "A fantastic professional, obviously 35 years of age, still going strong, still our main man in terms of who everybody look at to try and score goals.
"He's just a top, top pro in great nick for his age and he's scored a lot of important goals. He works so, so hard for the team."
Zamora: Get on it Danny
Zamora now wants Welbeck to finish the season strongly and continue to be selfish in his new found quest for goals.
"I'm like, listen mate, every free kick, every penalty, whatever it may be, get on it, I want him to get those numbers.
"He's almost there, he's doing well and hopefully he can stay fit, do more games and hit those numbers again."
