Why Albion keeper was congratulated by team-mates after away win

James Beadle shone for Birmingham City in their 2-1 success at Norwich in the Championship.

Beadle has had some criticism at times this term but the England under-21 international shone at Carrow Road.

Inevitably, he will be compared to Carl Rushworth, the Seagulls goalkeeper on loan at leaders Coventry City.

Rushworth seems to have the edge in terms of work with the ball at his feet and last week registered an assist in the win over Middlesbrough.

But Birmingham boss Chris Davies has no complaints over Beadle’s glovework.

Davies said: “Goalkeepers are obviously very involved in the build-up these days and passing the ball out from the back.

“But, fundamentally, their job is to save shots and have big moments in the goal, and James had a few for us.

“He’s good around his line, he’s quick around his line, he’s a big size and he made some good reaction saves and he had a couple of big moments in there for us today, which the players have congratulated him for in the dressing room.”

Beadle continues to fend off strong competition from Ryan Allsop to be first choice for Blues, who are currently one place and two points outside the play-off places.

The race for the Premier League continues this midweek with Birmingham away to Tommy Watson’s Millwall and Rushworth and Coventry visiting Sheffield United, both on Wednesday.

Watson had the first start of his loan with the Lions on Saturday but was taken off after an hour in a 3-1 defeat at home to Portsmouth.
