AC Milan managed to obtain Mike Maignan’s renewal after months of negotiations, but there was interest from rivals Juventus.
During the summer window it looked certain that Maignan’s time at Milan was coming to an end. Chelsea tried to sign him before the Club World Cup, and even though he remained at the club the chances of him extending his deal – expiring in 2026 – seemed very slim.
Thanks to the work of Massimiliano Allegri, Igli Tare and the staff, reports suggested that the Frenchman was becoming more open to extending. Then, the announcement that he had renewed his new deal until 2031 came last month, with a Sky journalist telling us it is the ‘signing of the year’.
Juventus probed Maignan: The background
Matteo Moretto revealed a behind-the-scenes story dating back to the months-long stalemate in negotiations between Maignan and Milan, and it concerns Juventus. He spoke in the latest YouTube video on Fabrizio Romano’s channel.
“Juventus is going through a difficult period sportingly. After a strong start with Spalletti in charge, the team has stalled in terms of results, both in the Champions League and in the league,” he said.
“One of the most important issues is certainly the goalkeeper, because Di Gregorio ‘s performance is causing controversy. However, I want to focus on two other names linked to Juventus. First, I can confirm that between November and December, Juventus contacted Mike Maignan.
“They also offered him the possibility of earning a certain salary, which was only slightly higher than what he earns at AC Milan after his recent contract renewal. Juventus called Maignan’s entourage and asked if they could sit down to discuss a future together.
“However, at that point, Maignan stalled, clearly stating that his priority was Milan. In fact, by stalling, he then made it clear to Juventus that their paths could not cross.
“Obviously, we all know how it ended. Maignan renewed his contract with Milan until 2030 plus one. The press release stated 2031, but from what I understand, it’s 30 plus one with an option in favour of Milan.
“Over the past few months, Maignan has certainly had foreign clubs interested, not only Chelsea in the summer, but also Bayern Munich between September and October. Bayern Munich, however, never made a move again.
“We’ve certainly seen interest from Juventus, who had asked Maignan if he was available, but he closed the door on that possibility.”
