UEFA rules block 18y/o Newcastle United star from playing in Champions League after first-team…

Newcastle United team news: Eddie Howe’s side are back in Champions League action as they host Qarabag on Tuesday night at St James’ Park (8pm kick-off).

Newcastle United are set to confirm progress to the Champions League last-16 this week as they play Qarabag in the second leg of the knockout round play-offs.

The Magpies won 6-1 in Baku last week, meaning they are all but certain of progressing to the next stage where they will face either Barcelona or Chelsea. The draw for the knockout rounds of the Champions League will take place on Friday.

In the meantime, Newcastle will be looking to complete the tie against the champions of Azerbaijan with Eddie Howe looking to rotate his side amid a demanding fixture schedule.

Malick Thiaw will miss out on Tuesday due to suspension. The German defender picked up his third yellow card in the Champions League during last week’s win over Qarabag.

Newcastle also have several injury absences with Bruno Guimaraes, Tino Livramento, Fabian Schar and Emil Krafth already ruled out.

Lewis Miley is also expected to miss the match due to a leg injury while Yoane Wissa and Sven Botman have missed the last three games but are thought to be closing in on returns from minor injury problems.

The pair were spotted back in training on Monday ahead of the Qarabag game and could make their returns to the side on Tuesday.

There were also some youngsters involved in the session with the likes of Leo Shahar, Alex Murphy and Sean Neave Darsley Park regulars at this point. The trio were all named on the bench last week against Qarabag and have regularly featured in first-team squads despite limited appearances.

Seung-soo was named on the bench in the recent 3-1 FA Cup win at Aston Villa but is ineligible to feature in the Champions League due to UEFA squad rules.

Why Park Seung-soo can’t play for NUFC in the Champions League

Seung-soo is ineligible to feature for Newcastle in the Champions League as he has not been included in the club’s ‘List A’ squad and is ineligible to be named in the ‘List B’ squad. Although the ‘List B’ is for players born on or after January 1, 2004 and Seung-soo is just 18, players named on the list are also required to have played for the club for at least two years.

The South Korean joined Newcastle Suwon Samsung Bluewings last summer. The teenage winger featured prominently in pre-season for United but is yet to make a competitive appearance.
