Cenk Tosun sends message to ex-Everton teammate Andre Gomes after announcement

Cenk Tosun left Everton and Andre Gomes behind in July 2022 when his contract expired.

The Turkey international returned to Besiktas after a tough time on Merseyside, but appeared to strike up a friendship with the Portugal international during their four years together at Everton.

Gomes now finds himself at Columbus Crew after being released by Lille in January – and Tosun was quick to wish his former Everton teammate well on Instagram.

What Cenk Tosun wrote to Andre Gomes after Columbus Crew move confirmed

The pair played 20 games together for the Toffees, and still seem to be very close.

After hearing that Gomes had moved to Major League Soccer, Tosun wrote: “Congrats Andre my brother. Good luck ❤️.”

Former Wolves winger Ivan Cavaleiro also replied, sending his fellow countryman three emojis of hands applauding.

Cenk Tosun and Andre Gomes deals are hopefully a thing of the past at Everton

The Toffees spent a lot of money on Tosun – who scarred Everton fans – and Gomes without getting much back in return.

The Turkish striker cost £27m when arriving from Besiktas in January 2018, but went on to score just 11 goals in 61 appearances before returning to the Super Lig side on a free transfer.

With regard to Gomes – who suffered a horrendous injury – the Portuguese midfielder joined in a £22m move from Barcelona in June 2019, and while he often performed well, he did little to help Everton push on and left on a free transfer as well.

It meant Everton lost almost £50m worth of signings for nothing, while moving closer to the relegation zone and suffering PSR (Profit and Sustainability Rules) issues along the way under Farhad Moshiri.
