‘Fighting against the referee…’ – Leeds United legend makes bold claim after draw against Aston …

Leeds United

The recent run of results Leeds United have pulled together to drag themselves up the table in recent weeks have been very impressive. Daniel Farke’s side look much different than they did earlier in the season.

This version of the Leeds side is much more disciplined and ready to fight in games. Nothing speaks more to this than their huge win against Nottingham Forest, followed by their comeback draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Against Aston Villa on Saturday, Leeds United were by far the better team on the afternoon for large parts of the game. They managed to shut out the home side for long periods, forcing them out wide to cross. Unai Emery’s team lacked ideas and could not penetrate the middle of the park. It took a stroke of luck just before the 90th minute when an effort went off Tammy Abraham’s knee to score the equalizer.

Leeds United legend slams refereeing after Aston Villa result

Some people within Leeds United feel like the game could have been won, including Tony Dorigo. The Whites legend voiced out his concern that the referee made things difficult for his side to come away with all three points.

“When Nmecha came on and played with Calvert-Lewin, that combination worked really well, and there were still chances to be had, but we couldn’t take one, so yeah, the longer it goes, you’re thinking, you know what, we might do this, but for it to be taken away was disappointing.” Dorigo said.

“I also thought we were kind of fighting against the referee a bit all game long, nothing really went our way, so from that point of view it was frustrating as well.”

There was nothing majorly controversial, but some of the calls late in the game seemed to favour the home side.

Whites were unlucky in the end

Ultimately this was a hotly contested game between two sides; Farke set his team up well tactically. The opponents could not match the intensity in the first half, with Leeds getting chances on the break via their pressing structure. Villa struggled for most of the game, and their only route to goal was from crosses and set pieces. If anything, this shows how far the Whites have come – they have been defensively poor in some games, but they showed up on Saturday.
