Gary Neville fears “shock of the century” that Leeds United would love to see

Leeds United are six clear of the relegation zone as things stand, and the fight to stay up has all focus on whether or not Spurs might actually drop out of the Premier League.

A trip to Aston Villa was one of Leeds’ toughest remaining games in a relatively favourable last 12. Getting anything from it and therefore retaining our six-point gap would be seriously ideal.

A fully deserved draw sees Leeds remain as we were prior to the weekend, but actually also further in front of the two sides sandwiched between us and West Ham.

Spurs tumble closer to Premier League relegation zone as Leeds United watch on

The bonus of Leeds getting a point was seeing West Ham fail to beat Bournemouth at home. Then, watching Nottingham Forest then lose on Sunday afternoon in stoppage time to Liverpool.

Already, ground on the Irons was maintained, and extended on Vitor Pereira’s side. Another positive weekend would have been capped off by Arsenal doing the business over their North London rivals Spurs.

A frantic game saw Spurs peg the Gunners back instantly after the away side took the lead through Eberechi Eze. However, Igor Tudor’s men were by far second best against Arsenal and the scoreline eventually reflected that gulf in quality.

Viktor Gyokeres netted a fine brace either side of Eze’s second to make it a 4-1 rout. As a result, Spurs are now two behind Leeds and only four clear of 18th-placed West Ham.

Gary Neville makes stunning Spurs assessment in relegation scrap – Leeds United will love it

What I’ve noticed over this weekend is a lot of neutrals (non-Leeds fans) are happy to completely discount us from the relegation equation. I’m nowhere near having that sort of optimism.

Having said that, the main talking point down at the bottom from Sunday was Spurs drifting into potential doom with a hammering in the derby.

Gary Neville believes it would be the “shock of the century” if Tudor can’t arrest Spurs’ slide towards relegation.

“Tottenham are in trouble,” Neville said on The Gary Neville Podcast. “Last season they skirted with it a little bit, relegation. But they were always sort of clear of it. You never really felt they were going to go down.

“This season they’ve got some real work to do and they better do it quickly by the way because I watch West Ham and I watch Nottingham Forest and they’ve got something about them that you think they’re going to pick up points.

“So, it’s not going to be a case of Tottenham can just sit there and think that this is just going to happen, they’re going to have to work bloody hard to get out of this mess. It’s unthinkable. You can’t think this amazing, great football club… but on the football side of it they’ve underdelivered for a number of years.

“This is the second season on the trot that they’re in this type of position so it’s not a fluke any more, this is a pattern of what you are. And it would be the shock of the century wouldn’t it, it would be absolutely mind-blowing to think that they could disappear out of this league.”

Leeds United would love for Spurs to continue slump – Makes survival much more likely

For Daniel Farke, keeping our form as is for the rest of the season will be enough for safety. That is irrespective of whatever happens at our rivals.

That being said, Spurs’ sustained misery is absolutely great news for Leeds. If they carry on sliding closer to the bottom three, that gives us another buffer for survival by having another side below us.

In the meantime, we just have to keep plugging along. The fixtures we’ve got left, especially at home, are more than enough for us to steer clear of the drop.
