On so many occasoins this season, Dominik Szoboszlai has been Liverpool’s saviour.

Liverpool’s win over Nottingham Forest could be labelled as that of champions if they hadn’t left themselves with too much to do.

Out of sorts and out of ideas, Arne Slot’s side ended up with bodies everywhere as they frantically searched for a winning goal. Whilst all those around him were losing their heads, especially after Alexis Mac Allister’s disallowed goal, Dominik Szoboszlai kept his with a moment of composure that made a difference.

Dominik Szoboszlai hails Liverpool spirit

Backed by Virgil Van Dijk to replace him as captain, it is easy to see why the versatile Hungarian is so popular with his teammates, manager and fans alike. Nobody has provided more consistency throughout what has been a season of disappointments so far. Not that the 25-year old is going to let this affect his standards, posting on X: “Teamwork. Belief. Three points.”

Almost a post in self-reflection given what his qualities as a player are. He doesn’t stop working and leading by example and has never once quit when others around him have let their heads drop. When he has been needed to provide a moment of inspiration, he has stepped up when others have been found wanting.

Arne Slot praises Szoboszlai

According to Slot, via the club’s website, there is one main reason why Szoboszlai has become so important: “I think there you can see how much confidence he has at the moment and how well he has played this season, because it's the last second of the game – at least I thought it was the last second of the game. Apparently it was a bit longer to go because after we scored we still played for one more minute. But it felt to me when I looked at the time that it was the last moment and to stay so cool in a moment where everyone, all the fans, were expecting the ball to come in and he was waiting, waiting, and in the end he brought it in.

“Well done by Virgil [van Dijk] as well, to change the angle of attack to go to the second post. And Macca was not a surprise to me that he was both times our goalscorer because he played with the mentality you need to play in these games and that's why he was twice in that situation to finish. The first half was really poor, the worst we've played until now I think, but the second half was much better, controlled the game much more, had our chances already earlier in the second half. And in the first half, although we were really poor, we did not concede a lot and we defended really well in our box.”
