Mohamed Salah has been nowhere near his best this season for Liverpool and cut a frustrated figure against Nottingham Forest.

It had all been going so well. Mohamed Salah looked something near his best. He’d returned to scoring ways for Liverpool and had four assists and a goal in his last five outings.

Against Nottingham Forest though, the Reds improved markedly once he went off to be replaced by the livewire that is Rio Ngumoha. The veteran winger didn’t look too pleased about the decision, even if it was one that was proven to be the correct one from Arne Slot.

Mohamed Salah subbed against Nottingham Forest

No player ever looks happy being substituted and there is an element of starting with an opinion and working back the way over the latest “incident”. Everyone is looking for a reaction and over-analysing the slightest body language hint that all might not be ok after all. Salah was probably more unhappy at his own performance and at Liverpool being level with Forest than because he was being taken off.

Despite the recent upturn in performances from Salah, there is still a feeling that the writing is on the wall, that his time at Anfield is coming to an end. Very rarely do players get to go out on a high or on their own terms and it looks like Salah will suffer the same fate as interest from MLS and Saudi Arabia continues to get reported.

Salah not happy at Liverpool hook

Speaking on BBC Five Live, Clinton Morrison reckons that Champions League football is out of the question if Salah and Liverpool don’t get their finger out: “You know, there are still some big problems there, aren't there, in terms of Salah didn't look happy again,” he told host Rick Edwards.

“Oh, I mean, look, if Liverpool play like that for the rest of the season, they're not getting Champions League.

“And Salah didn't look happy again, did he? He looked...” replied Edwards

“No, and I think he'll be particularly unhappy because when Ngumoha came on, he was really lively. He created that first disallowed goal. It was exciting. He just made stuff happen. And Salah didn't do any of that at all.

“No, he still hasn't. I think there's still a big issue there, isn't there?” Asked Edwards.

“Yeah, well he's not scored now, I think in, scored in nine Premier League. But yeah, it's his longest ever run without Premier League goal now. I just don't think that it's harmonious behind the scenes with him and on a slot. I think we saw that before Christmas with the throw me under the bus statement and then the apology. He did look grumpy at being subbed, but then as we discussed earlier on the season, if you're going to play badly, you are going to get subbed potentially.”
