Michael Carrick has explained his Lisandro Martinez and Benjamin Sesko decisions for Manchester United's trip to Everton. The latter has been named on the bench again despite scoring twice in his last three cameos while Martinez has been left out entirely.

Speaking to Sky Sports on the Argentine's absence, he said: "He picked up something during the week. It doesn't seem too bad at all. We're working through that at the moment. He's not available tonight. Leny Yoro has done well, he comes in and we move forward."

Leny Yoro has come into the team for Martinez with that as the only change which sees Sesko forced to settle to be a substitute again.

On the striker, he added: "He's still learning, he's still young, and he's still learning, he's still adapting to kind of life here as well.

"I'm delighted the way he's going. He's taking big steps, even in the short time we've been together. And he's in a good place. There's a little bit of being, I wouldn't say, careful. I think this is managing it as well.

"And he's ready. He's ready. He looks like a real threat. He looks like a real presence. He's confident.

"We've got selections to make, and it's not always straightforward, but certainly haven't been to come on and finish games, as he has done recently, is a great thing for us to have.

"He's going to be a big player at this club. For a long time, I've been hugely impressed with what he's done already, but I think there's loads more to come from him, so I'm really excited about that."

Keeping Bryan Mbeumo as the striker is likely because Carrick wants to keep continuity with starting XI changes rare.

Patrick Dorgu began in Carrick's favoured team before injury forced him out with Matheus Cunha taking his place. The Brazil international had been impressing in his cameos and continued making an impact once brought into the starting XI.

No European football or cup games has allowed Carrick to make minimal changes with United in a strong position to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Aston Villa, Chelsea and Liverpool are also in the race for top five but all three still have commitments in other competitions.
