Five things learned as Manchester United win 1-0 vs Everton

Manchester United’s first-ever trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium ended with the Red Devils taking all three points against Everton.

Benjamin Sesko’s second-half goal means that Manchester United have made it 10 games unbeaten for the first time since 2021.

The Red Devils are still yet to be beaten in 2026, but they were made to work hard for a 1-0 win on Merseyside against a well-organised defence set up by former United boss David Moyes.

Who was your Man Utd MAN OF THE MATCH vs Everton?

Let us know why!

United are targeting Champions League football this season, and this victory has lifted them back up to fourth in the Premier League table with 11 games remaining.

Benjamin Sesko does it again

Carrick’s unbeaten streak is only intact because of Benjamin Sesko’s late equaliser against West Ham last time out. Sesko proved he should be starting matches, but once again, he was named on the bench.

The Slovenian had to wait patiently for his chance, but he was introduced in the 57th minute and went on to break the deadlock in the 72nd minute.

How do you predict Benjamin Sesko’s career at Manchester United will go?

It's early – but let's see your predictions!

It is his fifth goal in his last six Premier League appearances despite having only started in one of those matches.

Lisandro Martinez’s absence is felt

Before kick-off on Merseyside, it was confirmed that Lisandro Martinez was out of the matchday squad.

Michael Carrick then confirmed that the Argentine defender had picked up a knock during training in the week, meaning Leny Yoro stepped into United’s starting XI vs Everton.

United’s record without Martinez is night and day compared to when he is in the team, and his line-breaking passes were sorely missed by the Red Devils at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

While Yoro is a promising talent, in possession, he doesn’t have the same passing range and composure of Martinez. Carrick will hope to have his World Cup-winning centre-back back fit as soon as possible.

Man United started rusty after two-week break

There was a 13-day break between United’s draw with West Ham and this clash against Everton, and Carrick’s side looked rusty on their return to action.

United legend Gary Neville immediately picked up on “sloppy” passing from the visitors, and overall the players struggled for any creative spark in possession.

Thankfully, United grew into the game and were much improved in the second half. Up next is a visit from Crystal Palace and Carrick will hope to carry the positive momentum into that clash.

James Garner shines against former side

There was anticipation of Kobbie Mainoo’s duel with James Garner in midfield, but the Everton star instead ended up playing as a makeshift right-back, a role he has become familiar with this season.

Instead of going head-to-head with a fellow Carrington graduate, Garner had the task of keeping Matheus Cunha quiet and, unfortunately, he succeeded.

Garner has been linked with a United return, and his performance here certainly suggests it wouldn’t be the worst deal for Ineos to explore.

Bryan Mbeumo injury scare

A worrying sight for United fans in the second half was watching Bryan Mbeumo limp off the pitch to be replaced by Noussair Mazraoui.

Mbeumo is United’s top scorer in 2025/26, so Carrick will hope that the 26-year-old forward can avoid a spell on the sidelines.

With Matthijs de Ligt, Mason Mount and now Martinez out injured, the last thing United need is another blow to Mbeumo.
