Official UEFA document confirms Newcastle United's final Champions League squad - key…

Newcastle United latest news: Eddie Howe’s side face Qarabag in the second-leg of their Champions League play-off tie.

Newcastle United’s ‘List A’ squad for the Champions League knockout stages has been confirmed.

The only alteration in that from the one they submitted in September ahead of their league phase campaign is the removal of Emil Krafth whose season has been cut short because of a knee injury. Eddie Howe confirmed last week that the Swedish international has undergone surgery on that injury and is likely to miss the remainder of the season.

John Ruddy was announced as Krafth’s replacement in the squad. Newcastle United’s lack of transfer activity during the winter window and the sale of Jamaal Lascelles to Leicester City meant that there wasn’t any viable outfield player to add to the squad, leaving Ruddy, who hasn’t made a single first-team appearance during his time on Tyneside, as the ultimate beneficiary.

Newcastle United lead Qarabag 6-1 following their first-leg triumph in Baku and Howe could opt to heavily rotate his team for Tuesday night’s game. He will be restricted in who he can pick, though, and will only be able to name players in his List A squad or those who qualify for their List B squad.

UEFA rules on who can be registered in a List B squad read: ‘A player may be registered on List B if he is born on or after 1 January 2004 and has, since his 15th birthday, been eligible to play for the club concerned for any uninterrupted period of two years, or a total of three consecutive years with a maximum of one loan period to a club from the same association for a period not longer than one year. Players aged 16 may be registered on List B if they have been registered with the participating club for the previous two years without interruption.’

Lewis Miley, Lewis Hall and Sean Neave all qualify for Newcastle United’s List B squad and thus can feature against Qarabag - although Miley will not get a run out at St James’ Park due to injury. Neave, meanwhile, has not made a single domestic first-team appearance for the Magpies but made his competitive debut during the final stages of their first-leg in Baku.

As detailed above, Miley, Hall and Neave, all of whom have featured to varying degrees for the Magpies in this season’s Champions League, do not have to be registered in Newcastle United’s ‘List A’ squad. Leo Shahar, Alex Murphy and Aidan Harris, meanwhile, also do not need to be registered. None of those players have yet to take to the field in a Champions League match under Howe.
