Everton sit ninth in the Premier League table with their hopes of European qualification in the balance.

Gary Neville believes that Everton must back David Moyes in the summer transfer window to ensure the Toffees can continue their progress up the Premier League table.

Everton’s chances of securing European qualification this season are in doubt after their latest slip-up at Hill Dickinson Stadium. A 1-0 loss to Manchester United extended the Blues’ winless streak at their new ground to seven matches in all competitions - and have won just four times at home in the league this season.

Everton showed spirit and resolve against Champions League-chasing United but lacked a cutting edge and were ultimately were undone by a moment of quality. United’s three summer signings Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko combined, with the latter rounding off the sweeping move.

Moyes’ side sit ninth in the table but just a point below the Europa Conference League qualification place. The Scot has made his ambitions clear that he wants to get Everton back into Europe - and Neville believes that the manager needs to be supported in terms of recruitment.

Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast, the former Man United defender said: “They were game, dogged, organised and got beat by a sensational goal from a counter-attack. It was always going to be about one moment of quality or one mistake. David Moyes, at the end of the season, will want a higher contribution from his board and the ownership. He needs some players, doesn’t he? What he’s getting out of these players and the points total they have is absolutely fantastic.

“It’s not a spectacular team. They have got a real good set of pros who but a real shift in, which is a great quality. You can’t criticise any of those lads out on the pitch tonight. I always say if you’re an Everton fan leaving this stadium, you’ll be very disappointed but what they’ll never do is question the committment of the players. You can see they’re giving everything.

“They just need those three of four players. Now, I know every team need three or four players but if they had an Mbeumo or a player who seems to exist at other clubs. They have got [Iliman] Ndiaye down here, he is lively and good but need two or three players who can give them that bit of quality to go with the solidity of the other lads they have got.

“They could then jump up to eighth, seventh and be challenging but they’re going to need that recruitment to be good and David Moyes is going to need backing. These Everton fans deserve that. You feel for Everton because they put an awful lot into the game but quality in open play wasn’t good enough.”
