And Fabian Hurzeler believes confidence remains that they can beat anyone.
Albion were left still in 14th place by the full set of weekend results having temporarily moved up two places immediately after winning 2-0 at Brentford.
The five teams immediately above them all have advantages of three points or less after Everton lost 1-0 at home to Manchester United on Monday night.
But Albion can only take full advantage with a win at home to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
They then face a midweek test by leaders Arsenal at the Amex.
Speaking after success at the Gtech Community Stadium, Albion boss Hurzeler said: “We have a confidence and belief, especially I have a belief in the group and players that we can go to any stadium and we’re able to win.
“To lose this belief would be the worst thing and to get away from your identity would be the worst thing in these kinds of moments.
“We are really focused on the process and don’t get too much distracted by the result, try to stick to your principles but it is not always easy.
“Now it is easy to say after a win, but in moments where you lose, or have a tough period where you concede a goal in the last minute, it is not so easy to speak afterwards, but now I can say how we try to handle it.
“We really try to focus on the process, try to control the controllables and this we have to keep doing to get out of it.”
Albion cannot overhaul all five teams just above them at the weekend given that Newcastle play Everton on Saturday.
But they can make inroads IF they pull off what looks a substantial challenge against a Forest side who should have taken some reward against Liverpool
Sunderland are away to Bournemouth on Saturday.
Sunday’s games include Fulham v Spurs and Crystal Palace’s trip to Manchester United.
