Michael Carrick has been left with little option but to start Benjamin Sesko in Manchester United's next game, according to Jamie Carragher. Sesko came off the bench to score another crucial goal as United beat Everton 1-0 to move back into fourth place in the Premier League on Monday night.

The £73.7million signing from RB Leipzig sprinted the length of the pitch before providing a confident finishing touch to a flowing counter-attack that involved fellow summer arrivals Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo. In doing so - and with the following angry celebration - he sent a clear message to Carrick.

Sesko has now scored six goals in his last seven games, with his last two strikes earning United four crucial points, following the late equaliser at West Ham. Carrick has selected Mbeumo as his central striker, with Cunha in support, but Sesko is banging down the door with his form.

"Sesko has gone over 80 yards and then finishes, you expect him to be breathing heavily and panting after it, but no, he still has the energy to really celebrate," Carragher said on Sky Sports.

"He's had maybe a slower start than he would have like initially, but he has been on fire of late. We were wondering whether he would start tonight, it almost feels inevitable now. He has put himself into the team."

Sesko only scored twice under the management of Ruben Amorim, but has now settled and is impressing under Carrick, despite his role as a substitute. Carrick has made just two changes in his six matches in charge, both of which have been due to injury, but Sesko is applying pressure on the interim boss.

Asked about his desire to start, Carrick replied: “Yeah, there’s a bit of that. I think it’s not always as extreme as well. I think sometimes, I get why everyone’s talking about it and making a bigger deal of it.

"But I’ve got a really good relationship with Ben. We’ve had some really good conversations and he’s in a really good place. And part of us is helping him take his steps in development and growing him as a player.

“Sometimes that’s little steps, sometimes that’s bigger steps. He’s taking some huge steps recently in terms of the goals he scored and the impact and that confidence and that belief that he’s playing with now is great to see. We’ve obviously got to manage that as well. And we’ve got some good forwards, so it’s one of those decisions that we got to try and get right.”

“But I’ve got no problem with Ben, and he hasn’t got an issue. He obviously wants to play, but I can’t speak highly enough of how he’s been and the work he’s putting in and his attitude to come on and do what he’s done again. I thought he’s finished just with so much confidence and belief and ruthless finish, which sums up where he’s at at the minute, which is great to see.”
