West Ham could get the chance to make a chunk of money back on a big investment.

West Ham could well get the chance to make some of their money back on a big investment they made in recent times. The Hammers could have a huge summer ahead of them, and they don’t yet know which league they will be preparing to play in.

West Ham are making a real fight of survival, now two points off safety having clawed their way back to contention in recent weeks.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men now have a genuine chance, although they will need to find a way to pick up points through a tough run of games over the coming weeks to stay in the race.

If West Ham stay up this season, they will need to take significant steps to make sure they don’t find themselves in this position again this time next year, and if they don’t stay up, they will need to cut costs while remaining strong enough to compete for an instant return to the top flight.

Either way, there may be a decision to make over £35million investment Edson Alvarez, who faces an uncertain future. Alvarez struggled to adapt to Premier League football in his early days at the club and was sent out on loan to Fenerbahce for this season.

The Mexico captain has done well in Turkiye, though he is set to miss much of the rest of the season after undergoing ankle surgery, hoping to return in time for his home World Cup. There is said to be a £19.5million option to buy built into the loan, but that is viewed as too steep to Fenerbahce.

West Ham won’t want to lose much more than the £15million or so they would already be losing if they sold for that much, so it’s unlikely it will be reduced. According to Soccer News, Ajax may well be willing to offer an alternative deal having shown strong interest previously.

That could give West Ham options, though, it can’t be ruled out that Santo wants Alvarez back in the summer to take a look at him, given he has not had the opportunity to work with the midfielder. That is only likely to be an option if West Ham stay up, though, with a sale likely inevitable if the Iron are relegated.
