Stat Attack – West Ham v Bournemouth

Written by Matt Stevenson

Here is the xG from the W Ham match, a game in which AFCB never really got going, and in spells W Ham dominated. The opening was frantic, with W Ham having a corner in the first minute. Disasi had a header clawed away by Petrovic (rated 1 in 3) and his follow-up was deflected over by Truffert (1 in 2) although a goal kick was given. Three minute later, a cross from the right found Summerville near the six-yard box, but stretching it was deflected weakly into Petrovic’s arm (1 in 2). The game then steadied itself, with no real chances for the rest of the half, although W Ham were still having minor attempts. At half time the xG was W Ham 1.40 AFCB 0.05.

The second half saw the same pattern as the bulk of the first half with the game coming back into life around the hour mark. Rayan received the ball midway in our half and ran at W Ham, beating three men and curling a shot from the edge of the area that clipped the outside of the post (1 in 7). Rayan exuded confidence, although he could have slipped Kroupi in. Five minutes later, Brooks had an effort blocked (1 in 12). Castellanos had an ambitious overhead kick flash wide (1 in 5, that appears too high). Following a poor Senesi goal kick, Hill blocked a good chance from Soucek (1 in 4), then AFCB had a chance with Rayan’s effort blocked (1 in 10). W Ham then head a big chance, with Wilson nipping in front of Hill but Petrovic pushed out his flick (3 in 5). The game was becoming end-to-end, W Ham needed a win, but not to the extent the commentator on my feed thought, who intimated they’d be relegated at the end of the game without 3 points. Scott had a shot saved (1 in 9) before he deflected Summerville’s shot over (1 in 3). From a corner Wilson headed wide (1 in 3). There was time for 2 more moderate chances for W Ham (both about 1 in 11) from Summerville and Bowen that were blocked, but AFCB kept their clean sheet. At the final whistle the xG was W Ham 3.27 AFCB 0.65 with Understat having a smaller margin: W Ham 2.34 AFCB 0.52. Using either metric, we were the second-best team, although W Ham had recently outplayed Man Utd, so are in good form.
