“Depends on the player” – Director explains transfer situation after Sunderland offers

Sunderland made a big attempt to sign CA Osasuna’s Víctor Muñoz in the winter market.

On February 13th, Sport Witness covered claims from Spain of the Black Cats making two verbal offers for the winger. The first was €20m and the second was €25m plus Eliezer Mayenda joining the La Liga side on loan until the end of the season.

Osasuna didn’t encourage Sunderland’s offers and pointed to Muñoz’s €40m release clause.

The Black Cats didn’t activate the buyout clause or return with a bid close to the €40m clause.

Two weeks ago, Osasuna sporting director Braulio Vázquez insisted he didn’t even listen to the Premier League side’s efforts to sign Muñoz.

The official has now given another interview to DAZN in Spain and Marca have relayed his comments.

Marca again point out claims made elsewhere of Régis Le Bris’ side submitting offers for the 22-year-old in the last window.

While Vázquez talked about Sunderland’s attempt earlier, he now insists the player didn’t consider changing clubs in January. He mentioned that when asked about Muñoz’s potential exit.

“It depends on the player’s own wishes. He has had some opportunities, but at no point did he consider leaving because, as I said and as he himself has pointed out, he is in the right environment to continue growing,” he said.

Muñoz arrived at Osasuna from Real Madrid in July 2025. He played 2,016 minutes from 27 matches, managing five goals and four assists. The director is of the belief he wouldn’t have featured regularly at another club.

“He’s back in the starting line-up [against Real Madrid] and in another team with different demands, he probably wouldn’t be,” Vázquez explained.

It’s unclear whether Sunderland will return for the Spaniard after this season. Should they take this step, the Black Cats need to be wary of Real Madrid’s buyback clause.

“Real Madrid have a buy-back option for several years. If exercised, it would be to bring him into the first team. They are a serious club in that regard,” he added.
