Kobbie Mainoo makes feelings clear on Everton set piece tactics with Instagram post

Kobbie Mainoo appeared to aim a cheeky dig at Everton's set-piece tactics after Manchester United's 1-0 win on Monday night.

The Red Devils continued their resurgence under Michael Carrick at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, as Benjamin Sesko's winner secured them a hard-fought victory against the Toffees.

Three points on Merseyside saw United climb to fourth in the Premier League table, claiming their fifth win in six games since Carrick's appointment as interim head coach.

While Sesko's cool finish proved the difference at Everton, it was another of his teammates who earned plaudits.

United kept a first away clean sheet since last March, and this was due in no small part to goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Chasing an equaliser in the second half, Everton looked to unsettle the Belgian by crowding his six-yard box during a flurry of set-pieces.

But Lammens remained unfazed by the tough tactics, regularly claiming crosses and coming up with some crucial punches under pressure.

The 23-year-old's heroics between the sticks earned him the Player of the Match award, but it seems not everyone was thrilled by the circumstances surrounding it.

Shortly after the final whistle, Red Devils midfielder Mainoo took to Instagram to seemingly poke fun at the Toffees' set-piece approach.

Posting on his story, the Englishman first posted a picture of the Toffees players ganging up on Man United's in corners.

In the next post, Mainoo then shared an image of wrestlers appearing to compare the ruckus to a Royal Rumble in WWE.

The 20-year-old's hilarious dig quickly caught the eye of fans online, with many also seeing the funny side.

Reacting online, one fan simply wrote: "Royal Rumble," alongside some laughing emojis.

Another stressed how impressive Lammens had performed, commenting: "It's crazy how we didn't concede from these."

Agreeing, a third said: "Lammens’ best game in a United shirt so far for me because of the crap he had to go through.

"Really impressed with how decisive he was to either come and punch or stay and use his reflexes to parry anything headed his way. Having said that, this can’t be a thing next season man."

'One of my strengths'

Reflecting on his impressive display at Everton, Lammens admitted he had been pushed to his limit by their brutal set-piece routines.

Speaking to talkSPORT after full-time, he said: “In the beginning they did a little bit less pressure, but then they could see that I could come out on those balls, so they wanted to change something.

“Then after, maybe it was a little bit overkill. I couldn't even be inside the lines.

“I had to be in my own goal to stay on the pitch. So I think that's a bit too much.

“I understand that as well. When we get a corner, we also want to make the other goalkeeper as difficult as possible.

“That's the game and we have to deal with it. I think that's also one of my strengths. So I take pride in it to help the defence and the team out."

On dealing with Everton's tactics, he added: “Coming to Everton, we knew it was going to be a really difficult one. They are very physical.

“It's really important that we keep a zero today and that on those set pieces where they keep pushing and with their height, with their physicality, that we defend well.

“That was a good job that we did. Then we can see the players we have on top, the players coming in like Benjamin [Sesko], who can make the difference.

“It's such a big, big thing for us. So we know how long we can keep the zero. We know we always have a chance to win. So that was the case today.”
