Jamie Carragher had some complimentary words for Neville Southall last night, as he chose the former Everton stopper in his all-time Premier League list of goalkeepers.
Edwin van der Sar was the guest on Monday Night Football, meaning there was a segment after the Everton vs Man United game about the greatest goalkeepers the Premier League has seen.
What’s your thoughts after that, Toffees? 😫

Van der Sar himself was one of the very best.
But there are many others, and for pundit Jamie Carragher, Neville Southall is worthy of a place in the top 10.

As amazing a stint as Jordan Pickford has had at Everton so far, many fans still believe he has a way to go to surpass the legendary Southall.
Southall played for Everton from 1981 until 1999, and made a club-record 751 appearances.
His enduring excellence made him an Everton legend and one of the best goalkeepers this country has ever seen, and for Carragher there certainly aren’t many better.
Placing him eighth in his top 10, he said on Monday Night Football last night: “The reason he’s coming in is because, for me, in the 80s and the First Division before the Premier League, he was the best goalkeeper in the world.

“If we were judging all these goalkeepers on just their career, Neville Southall would be in my top two or three. And still I would say in the Premier League era at the start he was fantastic. He was man of the match in the FA Cup final in 1995.
“What I would say, the stadium Everton have got is fantastic. The one thing that is missing from there is a statue for Neville Southall. The reason I say that is because I think in Everton’s history they’ve probably had four world-class players, who’d go into a world XI.
Surely it’s high time for a Neville Southall statue to be erected at the Hill Dickinson Stadium?
Jamie Carragher, who ranked Southall 8th in his top 10 list of PL goalkeepers, reckons so… 🗿

“Dixie Dean would have been one I’d imagine in the 20s. But England’s 66 World Cup-winning team, the left-back was Ray Wilson and Alan Ball played in that team as well, he’s Everton’s greatest ever player.
“Everton’s greatest ever team in the mid-80s, he (Southall) was the one player in that team who could have got into a World XI, for five years from 1985 to 1990.”
Jamie Carragher’s top 10 list of Premier League goalkeepers was as follows:
1. Petr Cech
2. Peter Schmeichel
3. Alisson
4. David De Gea
5. Thibaut Courtois
6. Edwin Van Der Sar
7. Ederson
8. Neville Southall
9. David Seaman
10. Pepe Reina
