Ajax coach Fred Grim admits Vitezslav Jaros' knee injury "didn't look good" as the Liverpool goalkeeper now faces up to a lengthy recovery period.

Jaros was loaned to Ajax in the summer months and the Czech Republic international was regular in Amsterdam, making 26 starts before hurting himself in training last week.

Ajax confirmed on Friday that Jaros' campaign is now over and the shot-stopper will return to his parent club to begin the rehabilitation process.

The 24-year-old is the third Liverpool player to suffer a season-ending knee injury alongside Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni, whose campaigns ended in January and September, respectively.

Speaking about the setback, Ajax boss Grim said it was a tough one to take for the club and the player himself as he now faces up to the need for surgery.

"This has an impact, let’s put it that way,” Grim told ESPN. “It is never fun, but we just have to keep going. That’s the reality.

“He was in a lot of pain. You still hope it’s not too bad, but it didn’t look good.

“I’ve spoken to several players. Again, it’s very annoying. But we have to keep going. Everyone knows that.”

A statement from Ajax on February 20 read: "Ajax goalkeeper Viteslav Jaros has been ruled out for the rest of the season.

"The Amsterdam club’s shot-stopper sustained a serious knee injury during training today. Medical examinations at the hospital have shown that surgery is required, meaning he will not feature again this season."

Jaros made two appearances for Arne Slot's side last season, coming off the bench for a hamstrung Alisson Becker in the Premier League win over Crystal Palace in October of last year before starting the 3-2 win at Brighton in the Carabao Cup shortly after.
