Not mission impossible for Newcastle United

I know we have the Champions League tonight at St James’ Park but I just wanted to focus on the Premier League for a moment.

As we all know, this 2025/26 season has been a bit of a rollercoaster for Newcastle United.

In the Premier League it is Played 27 Won 10 Drawn 6 Lost 11 Goals For 38 Goals Against 39

In the other competitions it is Played 16 Won 10 Drawn 2 Lost 4 Goals For 38 Goals Against 19

To say that Newcastle United have done better in the other competitions is a massive understatement.

In 11 less games, Eddie Howe’s side have picked up the same amount of wins and scored the same amount of goals in other competitions, as they have in the Premier League. Whilst also at the same time conceding less than half as many goals (19 compared to 39).

The net result of this has seen Newcastle reach the semi-finals of the League Cup, set to match into the last 16 of the Champions League, whilst only two wins away from a Wembley FA Cup semi-final.

In contrast, the Premier League looking a bit mission impossible for most Newcastle United fans, when it comes to potential Champions League qualification, but is that really the case…?

Premier League table as at Tuesday 24 February 2026

As you can see, Newcastle United currently sitting in 12th on 36 points, with 11 Premier League games left to play.

Not going to argue, it doesn’t look promising.

Could that change though?

Well, one positive thing is that just like last season, fifth place in the Premier League looks all but guaranteed to get a Champions League place.

Newcastle United are currently nine points behind Chelsea who are fifth.

After the next three rounds of matches though, could Newcastle United be potentially level on points with Chelsea?

The next two rounds of Premier League matches see United at home in both matches, facing Everton and Man U. Chelsea are away to Arsenal and Aston Villa.

Then it is Chelsea v Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.

Is it impossible for Newcastle to win all of their next three games and Chelsea lose all their three? A tough ask but not impossible and it would need a big NUFC performance in West London to beat Chelsea. I do accept of course that it isn’t just Chelsea that United need to overhaul, but fact is, none of those towards the top end have been exceptional and all of those outside the top three have won less than half of their Premier League matches so far.

Eddie Howe has had a regular habit in the past of suddenly getting his team clicking into gear and going on very impressive winning runs.

At this point last season after 27 Premier League matches, Newcastle United had just completed a run of seven games against Premier League opposition (including Brighton in the FA Cup) and had lost five of the seven.

Things then clicked and out of nowhere we saw Newcastle United win all of their next six games against Premier League opposition, including the Wembley final against Liverpool. Eddie Howe’s side scoring 17 goals as they won the six games, conceding only three goals. That run effectively won United another Champions League qualification, as well as a first trophy in…a long time.

Leaving aside the Man City FA Cup match for a moment, the next six Premier League matches for Newcastle United are Everton (H), Man U (H), Chelsea (A), Sunderland (H), Palace (A) and Bournemouth (H).

I think there have been very encouraging signs in recent weeks, both performances and results. With the injury room now starting to get less crowded, I think there is real potential for Newcastle United to now go and transform their Premier League situation.

It will of course need some big performances, real consistency, as well as fine margins and a bit of luck going our way, but…it isn’t mission impossible.
