Former Premier League manager Gus Poyet believes it is too soon to judge Michael Carrick's credentials as Manchester United head coach.

The former United midfielder has made a sensational start to life back at the Old Trafford hot-seat. Carrick was installed as Ruben Amorim's successor on a temporary basis until the end of the season, taking the reins for a second time, and so far has steered them into the driving seat for Champions League football.

Benjamin Sesko's second-half effort helped United beat Everton on their first visit to the Toffees' Hill Dickinson Stadium and extended their run to six matches without defeat.

There have been calls for Carrick to be appointed permanent manager while some former United players have argued that the club need to take a different direction.

Poyet, however, feels that the club need to take their time with the appointment and wait until the end of the season before making judgement.

Speaking exclusively to the Manchester Evening News via Premier League betting odds site BetWright, he said: "I think he needs to finish well, I think it's early, knows the club, he has experience in his previous job, he's done very well.

"He knows what is suitable for for the club. Now long term, that's a decision that Manchester needs to talk about, I don't want to go back but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was similar, everybody was talking he would be here for 10 years and then he was not.

"It's early, but what he's done so far, with the same players as Amorim, it's going well for my United. So, we'll see how we finish the season and then we will be in a better position (to judge)."

United's Premier League-winning defender Gary Neville is among those to argue that despite Carrick's impressive start to life in the Old Trafford hotseat, they must appoint the very best option available.

Roberto De Zerbi, Thomas Tuchel and Oliver Glasner are among the names to be touted for the position. De Zerbi, who left Marseille earlier this year, has been repeatedly linked with the role and was considered as an option before Erik ten Hag's appointment.

Tuchel was mooted as a contender after England's World Cup campaign but the German has since penned fresh terms with the Three Lions, while Glasner will leave Crystal Palace in the summer at the end of his contract.

And Neville believes United still need a manager who is 'best in class'. He told Sky Sports on Monday: "I think Manchester United have to pursue another manager right now around the fact of you don't know how the results are going to go.

"Little things like [Thomas] Tuchel re-signing with England does start to take away the options for Manchester United and they don't harm Michael's chances of getting the job. If he gets United into the Champions League there will be a lot of fever around that he should be appointed.

"I'm not against him being appointed. I love him to bits and think that he's done an incredible job so far. I just feel that Manchester United should go for the best class of manager available.

"They've had young and inexperienced managers in the last two picks which have not quite worked. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come in before as an ex-player, who did a very good job for a couple of years, but that didn't work in the end. So I just feel removing as much risk as possible is the right option.

"But people who know me will know that's not personal against Michael because I love him to bits. He's a great lad, a great player and someone who's doing a very good job as a coach now."
