Ex-Sunderland head of performance James McCarron looks set for a new role in the Championship
Former Sunderland head of performance James McCarron is set to join Leicester City in a newly-created sporting director role, according to reports.
The Foxes are currently embroiled in a battle for survival at the foot of the Championship table following their relegation from the Premier League last season, and have had their precarious position compounded by a recent points deduction for falling foul of financial regulations.
To complicate matters further, the former Premier League champions, who also lifted an FA Cup just five years ago, recently parted company with head coach Marti Cifuentes, and have brought in Gary Rowett on an interim basis until the end of the campaign.
Speaking after his unveiling at the King Power Stadium, the 51-year-old said: "I'm really proud to be the new Leicester City manager and to have the opportunity to work with and lead a really talented group over the coming months. It's very clear to us all what needs to be achieved between now and the end of the season and the work begins immediately. I'm looking forward to building connections with the players, with the staff at the club and with the fans - all of which will be vital to helping us secure the results we need."
And Leicester now look set to bolster their backroom staff again with the arrival of McCarron. The ex-Sunderland head of performance spent 14 months on Wearside between May 2016 and June of the following year, and has since enjoyed stints working as an elite performance manager for the Premier League, head of sports science and medicine at Manchester City, sporting director at Belgian outfit Lommel - where he worked alongside former Black Cats boss Lee Johnson - and most recently, as director of player development for the City Football Group, Man City’s global sporting venture.

What is the latest on ex-Sunderland head of performance James McCarron?
Now, however, according to BBC Sport, McCarron looks set to part company with the City Football Group to take on a new role with Leicester. The expectation is that he will work alongside current Foxes director of football Jon Rudkin, and that he will begin his work at the King Power Stadium next month.
Explaining the decision to restructure his club in a recent interview with BBC Radio Leicester, owner Khun Top said: “The structure will change. He [Rudkin] will go up above the sporting director, and the sporting director will take care of more of the day-to-day, work more on strategy and what we should play [like], what identity, what players should be brought in, and work with the young ones in the academy."
