The Paraguay midfielder opened the scoring and helped his side to a 2-0 win which went against the logic of the league table.
He then discovered his friend, compatriot and international team-mate had done something very similar across London.
Gustavo Caballero scored his first goal for Portsmouth to set the ball rolling in an impressive 3-1 success at Millwall in the Championship.
To continue the coincidences, the two players have been given very similar songs by their respective fanbases.
Gomez made sure he got in touch with Caballero when he became aware he was making the unlikely loan move to Fratton Park from Santos in Brazil recently.
Caballero produced the sort of forceful finish of which Gomez would be proud to spark Pompey celebrations at The Den.
Gomez said: “I played with him in the Olympics in 2024.
“When he arrived here, I sent him a message.
“I told him he will always have a mate here and, if I can help him, I am always available for any Paraguayan players who come here.
“We are in contact. I just said if he needs anything, to ask.”
Gomez was a key member of the Paraguay squad who made it to the quarter-finals of the Olympics in France before losing on penalties to Egypt.
Caballero thought he had been left out when Albion granted permission for Julio Enciso to join the squad.
But he was restored the day before the tournament due to an injury and went on to play throughout the group stages.
His arrival gives Gomez extra Paraguayan company in England.
Speaking after his goalscoring display at Brentford, he said: “I’ve just seen he scored today.
“It’s great to see another Paraguayan come here.
“His league is super-competitive and I wish him all the best and hopefully he keeps going as he is. He has all my support.”
