Leading 6-1 from the first-leg win in Azerbaijan following four goals from Anthony Gordon and a goal each from Malick Thiaw and Jacob Murphy, it took the Magpies just four minutes to open the scoring at St James’ Park.
Will Osula’s header was saved by goalkeeper Mateusz Kocahlski but Sandro Tonali reacted quickest to poke home. Less than two minutes later it was 2-0 on the night as Joelinton converted Harvey Barnes’ cross.
It was a comfortable first-half but United let their standards slip in the second half as Camilo Duran and Elvin Jafarguliyev scored either side of Sven Botman’s header.
Eddie Howe made seven changes from the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday night as 21-year-old Alex Murphy made his full debut, replacing Lewis Hall at left-back.
The other changes saw Aaron Ramsdale, Sven Botman, Joelinton, Harvey Barnes, Will Osula and Jacob Murphy come in for Nick Pope, Malick Thiaw, Joe Willock, Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga.
Botman and Yoane Wissa returned to the squad after three games out injured while Ramsey dropped out due to a “tight hamstring”.
Tonali gave Newcastle the lead in the fourth minute. Barnes’ cross was headed on target by Osula and the Italian reacted quickest to the loose ball. Joelinton then quickly doubled the hosts’ lead after getting on the end of Barnes’ delivery.
Qarabag pulled one back in the 51st minute when Duran burst through on goal to slot the ball past Ramsdale. Sven Botman quickly restored United’s two-goal advantage when he headed in Kieran Trippier’s cross but the hosts conceded again after Dan Burn conceded a penalty.
Marko Janikovic’s spot-kick was saved by Ramsdale but Jafarguliyev followed in to score.
