Everton’s difficult run at Hill Dickinson Stadium continued Monday night, as a clinical counter-attack from Manchester United condemned David Moyes’ side to a frustrating 1-0 defeat.
Early Intent: Everton nearly had a dream start inside the first minute when Thierno Barry charged down a clearance from United keeper Senne Lammens, only for the ricochet to spin wide of the post.
Pickford’s Presence: Jordan Pickford was called into action early, making a sharp save from Amad Diallo to keep the scores level during a frantic opening period.
The Turning Point: In the 71st minute, against the run of play, United struck. Matheus Cunha unleashed a brilliant long ball to Bryan Mbeumo, who squared it for substitute Benjamin Šeško to finish ruthlessly.
Late Pressure: Everton threw everything forward in the closing stages. Michael Keane forced a world-class save from Lammens with a 25-yard piledriver, while the Toffees racked up 10 corners to United’s one, but couldn’t find the equaliser.
The “Home Hoodoo” Continues: Everton are now without a win in their last seven home games in all competitions
Moyes described the loss as “narrow” and pointed to the high level of effort from his squad, while admitting a lack of clinical edge in front of goal:
“Performance-wise, we’ve lost narrowly to Manchester United. I generally think we did very well, but we got done on a counter-attack. I think we put great effort in to get a goal, but we didn’t quite have the quality.”
