It ended Newcastle 3 Qarabag 2.
Ahead of each game we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives following the match.
An ‘interesting’ match at St James’ Park.
Plenty to talk about after this Champions League game.
As Newcastle United confirmed their progress into the last 16.
On this occasion it is David Punton:
POSITIVES
Achievement
Newcastle United have now matched the furthest they have ever previously gone in the Champions League.
Progress to the last 16 marks a significant and historic achievement for the current crop of players, guided by Eddie Howe. Repeating what Sir Bobby Robson did 23 years ago.
When you think back to the Mike Ashley era in the intervening years, this looked like it would never happen again.
Post-takeover, here we are.
We have a crack at getting into the quarter-finals.
Blistering starters
The first ten minutes blew Qarabag away.
The tie was already a dead rubber but the goals from Tonali and Joelinton put the seal on it.
As soon as they went in the hard work was done.
Useful minutes
Alex Murphy did pretty well at full back. He can be happy with the shift he put in.
Leo Shahar got his debut and there were some minutes for Yoane Wissa.
Barnes had a good game too, he’s going to be so important in the next round.
NEGATIVES
Striker department
It’s got to be said again, we really do miss Alexander Isak.
He may have left in a shoddy way but his goals are a big miss.
This is being made worse by Woltemade, Wissa and Osula all largely failing to fill the void he has left behind.
Surely one of them can tap a rich vein of form between now and the end of the season?
Wissa in particular, in the number 9 jersey, really does owe us some goals.
Blotted copybook
It’s hard for the team to stay focused when the aggregate score is so high.
That said, it was slightly sloppy to see our visitors claw their way back to 3-2 on the night.
It’s a minor criticism and it shows what happens when you switch off.
No barometer
The biggest tests lie ahead.
It’s going to be either Barcelona or Chelsea in the next round.
Qarabag had some decent results in the league phase, but they were so bad against us, you do wonder if it was any kind of barometer.
It felt like the easiest Champions League tie ever.
