Man United need players who knows what it takes to succeed at Old Trafford but on this occasion, they should pass.
Never go back to an ex. A strange statement for a man who is nearly 20 years married to his teenage sweetheart after separating for six years in between to make, but one that has an element of truth nonetheless.
Manchester United have brought several players back to Old Trafford over the years and the link to Scott McTominay is hardly surprising given his form since joining Napoli. The Serie A player of the year is enjoying another sterling career after firing Scotland to the World Cup too. His transformation from no.6 to goalscoring no.10 has been incredible.
Should Man United sign Scott McTominay?
On paper, McTominay is everything that United need; proven in the Premier League, a leader, physically dominant and someone who knows and understands the demands of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world. His face is plastered all over walls in Naples alongside Diego Maradona’s, he has grown into the responsibility of being a talisman for a club that plays in a football obsessed city.
There is always a but. McTominay is a top class, elite level footballer who has done a job for United in the past. He would run his 6ft 4inch frame into the ground for the club, however, he isn’t what the club needs in that position. As a no.8 he is wasted, unless he is being given license to spend most of his time in the box looking to get on the end of crosses and cut-backs, doing what he does best. United need a playmaker, a Bruno Fernandes or even Matheus Cunha in the all-important 10 role.
What has McTominay said about a United return?
It seems natural for English clubs to be linked with McTominay given his status as an association trained player and his form in Serie A, although a recent interview suggests that life in Italy is being kind to the 29-year old.
My agent has not communicated with anyone regarding my future," McTominay said in an interview with Corriere dello Sport. "He only speaks with me and with the club. He hasn't said anything to the newspapers. I am extremely happy here and, as far as I am concerned, I am a Napoli player; it is all I think about. The future is very important, and I could see myself in Napoli for a long time."
