Ashley Young shares his verdict on Man Utd hiring Michael Carrick permanently after Everton win

Ashley Young is warming to the idea of Michael Carrick becoming Manchester United’s permanent head coach, especially if he can maintain positive results for the remainder of the 2025/26 season.

Michael Carrick has enjoyed a strong start since returning to Manchester United as head coach in January.

The Red Devils have won five of the six games Carrick has been in charge of, with the latest victory coming on Monday night when United beat Everton 1-0 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Ashley Young featured on Premier League Productions as an analyst covering United’s win over Everton.

The former England international, who currently plays for Ipswich Town in the Championship, represented both clubs in his career.

Young, 40, enjoyed most of his success at United, where he won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Europa League.

Speaking after the match, Young stressed that Carrick should get the United job permanently if he keeps doing what he’s doing.

“That’s all he’s got to keep doing basically,” Young said.

“He’s just got to keep winning games. For me, if he keeps doing that, he gets the job. It’s that simple for me.

“You know, he’s come in, he gives the players the confidence to go out and play. You know, he’s got fans singing again, and he’s got fans hoping he’s got a team up into fourth, you know, three points of Aston Villa.

“If this keeps going that way, you know, I can’t see the club and I don’t think the club should turn in any other way because I think he’s got it right.

“He knows that they can play better. You know, we saw tonight in the first half, they weren’t as good as what they can be. you know, of course he wants to get to a point of where like they want to dominate teams, but right now they’re not able to do that. They’re playing more on the counterattack, but when it’s finishing off like they have done tonight, why wouldn’t you give him the job?”

Ashley Young’s stats this season

Young has made 15 appearances for Ipswich Town this season after joining Kieran McKenna’s side in the summer.

As one of the most experienced players in the Championship, Ipswich will hope that Young can help the Tractor Boys push for the play-offs.

The winger/full-back has not played for Ipswich since January.

Young made 32 appearances in the Premier League last summer and made four appearances in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Ipswich are currently fourth in the Championship, eight points adrift of Middlesbrough in second place.

Coventry City are leading the Championship table after 33 matches.
