Boston United Secure Former Leeds United, Northampton Town & Stoke City Forward

Boston United have moved to strengthen their squad ahead of the run-in, completing the signing of forward Liam McCarron on a short-term contract until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old arrives having been without a club since leaving Northampton Town at the conclusion of last season, and provides additional attacking depth as United look to maintain momentum in the National League.

McCarron began his career with Carlisle United before earning a move to Leeds United in 2019. His time at Elland Road saw him progress through the club’s development sides before making his Premier League debut in December 2021, coming off the bench in a 4-1 home defeat to Arsenal.

Following his departure from Leeds, McCarron joined Stoke City, with loan experience at Port Vale, before linking up with Northampton ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. During his time with the Cobblers, he made 21 appearances in all competitions and scored twice, though injuries curtailed his season and ultimately led to his release last summer.

Comfortable operating on the left flank, either as a winger or wing back, McCarron offers pace, work rate, and ball carrying ability, traits that have been highlighted throughout his career at both club and youth international level. He has also represented Scotland at under-19 level, underlining the pedigree Boston are tapping into with this addition.

The forward made his debut last night, as the Pilgrims beat Forest Green 3-2, moving up to tenth in the National League. He came on as a 72nd-minute sub for Jordy Hiwula.

From a Boston perspective, this looks like a sensible, low risk move at a crucial stage of the season. With fixtures coming thick and fast, adding a player with Football League experience and positional versatility could prove valuable, particularly if United are to sustain their push and avoid being stretched by injuries or fatigue in the weeks ahead.
