Hammers too slow – West Ham lowballing sees fee rise after Tuesday development

Matheus Martinelli

Rio, Brazil – Abril 26, 2025: Martinelli player during the game between Botafogo x Fluminense by 5rd round of Brazilian Championship at the Nilton Santos stadium

West Ham United have received a firm response from Brazil after Matheus Martinelli officially signed a contract renewal with Fluminense until the end of 2030.

According to a report from Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte, the 24-year-old midfielder put pen to paper on Tuesday.

The agreement had been advancing for days, but is now fully completed. His previous deal ran until December 2027.

That timing is important, because West Ham were among the clubs to test Fluminense earlier this year. The Brazilian side rejected approaches without opening formal talks.

Rejected bid and rising status

Globo Esporte recall that Fluminense turned down a €13m (£11.1m) offer during the first transfer window of 2026. The report does not name the bidding club, but West Ham had previously been linked with figures in that range.

Internally, Martinelli is not viewed as a negotiable asset. The midfielder is a product of the club’s academy and has become one of the side’s leaders.

At just 24, he already has 300 senior appearances for Fluminense. In doing so, he became the first academy graduate to reach that milestone. He also started in the club’s 2023 Copa Libertadores triumph and recently lifted the 2026 Rio de Janeiro state championship’s trophy as captain.

Those details strengthen his symbolic and sporting value. Therefore, the renewal is as much strategic as it is sentimental.

Player ambition balanced with club stance

In a recent exclusive interview thatwe covered at the time, Martinelli admitted he dreams of playing in one of the world’s top leagues. However, he made his position clear.

Any move, he said, must work for both him and Fluminense. It cannot simply be a unilateral decision.

That balanced message now gains extra weight. By extending until 2030, Fluminense have significantly improved their negotiating position. Any future suitor will need to move well beyond the €13m (£11.1m) previously rejected.

For West Ham, the landscape has changed. Interest may remain, but the cost of doing business has just increased.
