March is not quite here but already the vultures are beginning to circle, such is the reality of Nottingham Forest’s situation.

Clubs outside of the “big six” are always vulnerable to having their prized assets picked off. Even more so for those in the thick of a relegation battle.

The transfer links are already racking up as rivals eye the Reds’ star men. Elliot Anderson, Murillo, Ibrahim Sangare and Morgan Gibbs-White all have their admirers.

Teams are well aware, if the next few months do not go how Forest hope, there could be a fire sale at the City Ground. Even if Vitor Pereira does manage to steer the club to survival, some big names may well still depart.

Manchester United have become the latest side credited with an interest in Gibbs-White. They join Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa in keeping tabs on the Reds’ No.10.

Forest came close to losing their main playmaker last summer, of course. Spurs thought they had snapped him up, only for the 26-year-old to end up penning a new deal Trentside.

Announcing Gibbs-White had agreed fresh terms until 2028, the club said at the time: “The deal underlines the ambition of Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, whose vision for European success and sustained Premier League progress continues to shape the club's future.”

Marinakis was quoted as saying: “There was significant interest from various clubs, but we were determined to build our future with Morgan at the heart of it. I promised our fans we would not only compete, but grow stronger and stronger every season. Today is another big step in that journey."

And then there was that dig at Spurs; the quip that always threatened to come back to bite the Reds. “The result is, at the end of the day, we always win,” Marinakis said with a smile.

Whatever happens between now and May, Forest will not let any of their key men go on the cheap. Rivals hoping to grab a bargain might end up disappointed as the Reds know full well what their star players are worth.

It hasn’t necessarily been a vintage campaign for Gibbs-White but he is still doing his best to drag the club over the line - both at home and abroad. He has eight goals in all competitions and always gives his all, even if not everything comes off for him. When he urged fans to lay off Omari Hutchinson for making a hash of a corner against Wolverhampton Wanderers recently, it was an example of how much he cares.

Forest do need Gibbs-White to step up even more in the coming weeks; he hasn’t always done so in key games. But whenever he does move on, it may well be a case of the Reds only fully appreciating what they had when he is gone.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers man will be a hard man to replace whenever the time comes. Forest brought in James McAtee as cover last summer, but the ex-Manchester City man hasn’t pulled up too many trees so far.

This Reds dressing room has so much quality in it - Gibbs-White, Anderson, Sangare, Murillo, Nikola Milenkovic included. If this group does get broken up in the summer, Forest will kick themselves for allowing this season to pan out the way it has.
