On-loan goalkeeper Andre Onana is hoping to re-establish himself as Manchester United’s starting goalkeeper when he returns to the club at the end of the season.
The 29-year-old joined Turkish side Trabzonspor on loan on 11 September last year after a series of poor performances and notable mistakes led to United moving forward with the signing of Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens for £18m towards the end of the summer transfer window.
Onana’s loan ends in May and he is due to report for pre-season training at United, with the Cameroon international believing that he’ll be given the chance to fight for his place at the club, according to The Guardian.
The goalkeeper originally joined the club from Inter Milan for a fee of just over £44m in July 2023, with Erik ten Hag making him United’s number one, but a series of high-profile errors and erratic performances meant that new manager Ruben Amorim was eventually forced to drop him.

Onana did not start a single league match at the beginning of this season – with Altay Bayindir originally preferred before the signings of Lammens – and the former Inter Milan man was only between the sticks for the embarrassing defeat to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, where he was at fault for one of the goals.
He then moved to Trabzonspor in September, and faced further difficulty when omitted from the Cameroon squad for the recent Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
And while he believes he will get a chance to fight for his place at United later this year, he will likely struggle to compete for the number one spot due to Lammens’ recent form, with the 23-year-old impressing in matches including the 1-0 win over Everton earlier this week.
Everton boss David Moyes called Lammens United’s “best player” on the night, with interim United manager Michael Carrick labelling his performance “outstanding” as he praised the calmness, composure and decision-making in an “exemplary performance”.
