Everton were exploring a deal to sign PSV striker Ricardo Pepi during the January transfer window.

David Moyes was ‘fixated’ on signing a centre-forward last month and Ricardo Pepi was heavily linked to the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were rivalling Fulham for Pepi’s signature, although they never made an offer for the USA international.

Everton decided to focus on signing a winger after Jack Grealish’s injury, thus keeping their powder dry for a striker in the summer.

If they do reignite their interest in Pepi at the end of the season, it could cost them an unnecessary £4m

Pepi is enjoying a productive season for PSV, as he’s netted 12 goals in just 10 starts for the Dutch giants.

The 2003-born certainly proved himself in the Champions League campaign, scoring against Atletico Madrid, Napoli and Olympiacos.

Everton had the chance to sign Pepi in January for £35m, but the Friedkin Group decided against committing those funds.

That now looks like quite an expensive mistake, as according to journalist Eduardo Burgos, the striker’s price tag has risen to £39m ahead of the summer window.

PSV believe Pepi’s stock will rise at the World Cup, so they will be seeking offers closer to the £40m mark.

So, if Moyes and his recruitment chiefs decide to go back in for the 34-cap international, it’ll cost Everton an unnecessary extra £4m.

That could’ve easily been saved during the winter window, and how they could’ve done with a prolific striker right now.
