Matheus Cunha has already green-lit move for new Man Utd target, he thinks he’s a ‘great player’

Should Manchester United materialise their newly-reported interest in Morgan Gibbs-White, Matheus Cunha would certainly support the move.

Reports this week have revealed that the Red Devils have set their sights on a summer pursuit of Gibbs-White, having been attracted to his versatility and continued stellar form for Nottingham Forest.

Morgan Gibbs-White: The state of play

Last year, the midfielder was on the verge of joining Tottenham Hotspur from Forest after Spurs activated his then-£60 million release clause, until owner Evangelos Marinakis personally intervened to block the deal.

He subsequently persuaded the 26-year-old to stay put by offering him more lucrative terms, although it’s believed his new contract still contains a release clause.

Presumably, he’d have made the club factor in the prospect of relegation this season in order to allow him to depart relatively seamlessly if Forest do drop back down to the Championship.

Currently, they sit 17th-placed and only two points above West Ham in 18th.

What did Cunha have to say about Gibbs-White?

When still pying his trade for Wolverhampton Wanderers, Gibbs-White’s former club, last campaign, Cunha once replicated the England star’s celebration when they played against one another in a 2-2 draw between Forest and Wolves.

When some supporters perceived it as a dig towards Gibbs-White, the attacker was quick to de-escalate the situation, instead voicing his admiration for the Trees star.

“I didn’t know I would be doing that celebration after scoring such an amazing goal… it was a little bit of a joke with Morgan Gibbs-White. He’s a great player,” said Cunha, as quoted by Manchester Evening News.

“I know things have been said before the game about when we played each other in the Carabao Cup last year, so after he scored, I scored, and I remembered this celebration, but there was nothing else more than this. It was just a little joke between us.”

Meanwhile, Gibbs-White reacted by saying: “Cunha is a friend of mine. He’s a good guy, a really good guy. Football is entertainment, and we showed that today.”
