'Right price': Sam Allardyce conjures theory for why 'tremendous' Premier League 'talent' could be sold to Man Utd

Former England manager Sam Allardyce has refused to rule out the idea that Manchester United could end up signing Cole Palmer from Chelsea at some point.

Cole Palmer has deeply impressed at Stamford Bridge after the 23-year-old England international completed his stunning switch to Premier League side Chelsea in 2023.

A Manchester City youth academy product, Palmer left Manchester United’s crosstown rivals after the Blues agreed an initial transfer fee of £40m for him.

Chelsea’s transfer of the former Manchester City player included £2.5m in add-ons and Palmer was tied down to a seven-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Sam Allardyce has one transfer reason why Chelsea would be open to selling Cole Palmer to Man Utd

Cole Palmer has scored an impressive 52 times and registered 32 assists in 116 matches for Chelsea since his high-profile move to Stamford Bridge.

The Chelsea ace, whose current deal would expire in 2033, has become a key first-team player for the Blues amid being linked with Manchester United for some time.

The former Manchester City academy talent is a boyhood Man Utd fan and Sam Allardyce is convinced that a move to Old Trafford could still happen in the future.

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Allardyce insisted that Chelsea would always keep the door open for a Palmer sale due to the price tag he commands.

“I think Chelsea would always sell at the right price,” he said.

“It’s whether Manchester United have the money that Chelsea would want, but it would certainly be a big signing for Manchester United.

“And certainly, what is he now? 22? 23? He’s just the right age, five, six, seven, eight years in him.”

Allardyce labelled Palmer as a “tremendous talent” after his success so far, but he admitted Chelsea have the “infrastructure” in place to sell him if they needed to in the end.

“This is a particular talent that shone from day one at Chelsea when he left Manchester City,” he explained.

“Now, there’s been a bit of a lull because of the injury and because he’s been left out, but he will get back to where he was sooner rather than later, like you mean.

“So, he’s a tremendous talent and I often think that Chelsea, in their infrastructure, are always in a position to make a profit.”

Palmer has made 19 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea in the 2025-26 season and the Three Lions ace has netted nine times and picked up three assists.

The United-linked star has been a key player for Thomas Tuchel as well and Palmer is expected to play an important role at this summer’s World Cup with England.
