Man Utd 6-1 Arsenal: The day Dwight Yorke’s 22-minute hat-trick ended the title race

A huge win over Arsenal on this day in 2001 helped guide Manchester United to their third Premier League title in succession and their seventh title in just nine seasons.

The 2000/01 season saw Manchester United become the first club since Liverpool, in 1984, to win three consecutive league titles.

United remained a dominant force in English football after winning the Treble in 1999, with Sir Alex Ferguson still on a journey to knock Liverpool off their perch.

How many of Sir Alex Ferguson’s 13 titles were achieved without Man Utd being the OUTRIGHT top scoring team?

Can you name each of them?

Man Utd go 16 points clear after beating Arsenal 6-1

United produced a masterclass performance to spoil any chance Arsenal had of pushing Ferguson’s side for the league title.

Any lingering suggestion that Arsenal could turn things around and win the title was rubbished after United beat Arsenal 6-1 at Old Trafford.

The Reds scored five goals in the first half, including a 22-minute hat-trick from Dwight Yorke, which cancelled out Thierry Henry’s 16th-minute equaliser.

Just a few minutes after netting a hat-trick, Yorke broke away from Arsenal defenders again to set up Roy Keane to slot home past David Seaman.

United scored a fifth goal before the end of the first half when Nicky Butt assisted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Teddy Sheringham would make it 6-1 seconds after Solskjaer hit the post.

The win gave United a 16-point advantage on top of the Premier League table, but they went on to win the title with a 10-point gap over the Gunners.

Matheus Cunha has been compared to Dwight Yorke – Do you see it?

What are the similarities you see between the two players?

“Cunha’s got that ability, we were very fortunate to play with Yorkie, he could drop back, play in behind, almost like a 10 role.

“Cunha’s ability in terms of his shooting from outside the box, he’s got the pass, he can run in behind. It’s good to see him back.”

What did Sir Alex Ferguson say after Man Utd hammered Arsenal 6-1?

There was collective embarrassment in the Arsenal dressing room after losing 6-1 to United.

It was a humiliation of the highest order as Ferguson swatted Wenger aside with the best team in the country.

Speaking after the match, Ferguson said, as quoted by The Guardian: “It’s our best result of the season.

“Football can make you look a fool. But I think that’s Arsenal finished now. When you look at the points gap and the goal difference, I think it will be impossible for them to catch us now.”
